Although I had initially joined the fandom with the intent of making Alastor my husband, something about Sir Pentious captivated me. I've always had a fondness for the steampunk aesthetic, and I have a general weakness for softhearted, whimpering menfolk. Something about him captivated me immediately.
I originally watched the series with my roommate. When we officially met him "Radio Killed the Video Star", I remember leaning over to them and saying, almost verbatim, that he needed a mommy. After this I immediately started working on my oc to ship with him. Through developing her and their relationship, as while as fleshing out the lore I headcanon him to have, I couldn't help but fall deeper and deeper in love with him. There's something to be said about his inherit kindness and zest for life. Although it is clear how lonely and touch starved he is, he still lets himself be sacrificed in an attempt to protect his friends. His only friends, at that! He's been in hell since 1888, and only now has he met people worth dying for. The thought of his time spent alone and miserable makes my chest ache for him.
The length of time he spent in hell also implies some interesting things. Namely, it illustrates how resilient in the face of adversity he is. He hasn't lived a comfortable life, clearly, and even though that's mostly by his own doing, it does show he has a willingness to survive and persevere. He also has an unmatched measure of intelligence and ingenuity, adapting with the times despite his distaste for modernity. His machines are magnificent! The fact that his war machine is a dirigible- a notoriously unstable and dangerous manner of flight- and the fact that he has rebuilt it time and time again implies a mastery of chemistry and engineering that honestly deserves to be brought up more in canon. The fact that he's consistently treated as a failure with no acknowledgement about how genuinely capable he is boils my blood! Give my man the honors he's due!
The fact that he is a bit of a laughing stock, however, endears him even more to me. I always love an underdog. His social awkwardness is also very appealing. I love it when men are shy, blushing nerds. He seems the type that whimpers when you kiss him and accidentally calls you mommy, and that's really all a gal can wish for. I also enjoy how confident he is when he's actually in his element. The way he commanded people before the final battle was so attractive. As long as he's not trying to be something completely unlike himself, he's incredibly capable and alluring! Once he's freed himself of the desire to be seen as hip and cool, he can really accomplish anything.
Although I'm not the biggest fan of his canonical romantic relationship, I look forward to seeing my adorable subby snake man more in canon once season 2 and onward comes out. In the meantime, I'll be plugging away at my own fanfictions.
Bombastic, pompous, and cripplingly insecure- Sir Pentious is a sinner that contains multitudes. Behind the confident super villain bravado resides a sensitive, lonely man. His behavior makes it clear that he desperately craves recognition and approval. Pilot era posts(which are now nebulously canon) and his introduction to the series indicate that he was, for quite a long time, seeking that recognition from the Vee's. Namely Vox, as the overlord of technology. His tune changes quite quickly after Charlie shows him genuine affection and kindness. It took him less than half a year to become so endeared to Charlie and the rest of the denizens of the hotel that he was willing to die for them.
Although he is one of the secondary character's in season one, we get to see his narrative slowly begin to play out. As he settles into life amongst the hotel residents, he begins to become more authentically himself. Still mischievous and villainous, of course- and more than a little paranoid. But he begins to love his friends with an enviable fierceness. Even some background details, such as the Polaroids on Angel Dust's door, indicate that he's become a close friend to many of the people there.
He seems to posses a variety of powers in his sinner form that are never fully addressed. His prehensile tail is capable of constriction, and not only is he capable of hypnotizing people- he also can withstand Vox's hypnosis, which is otherwise shown to be very powerful. Vivziepop has also said that he possesses a venomous bite, but that he doesn't prefer to use it. His intelligence is also unmatched. His war machine is the only vehicle capable of slight we see in the Pentagram.
Sir Pentious' design was inspired by old-timey cartoon stock villains. Originally, the human world was supposed to be populated by superheros and villains. Pen's personality and general over the top steampunk aesthetic was a hold over from this previous idea. He is absolutely committed to this bit, and I love him for it. The maniacal laughter and war crimes are part of him, and I've decided they're funny.
